Welcome to Amiga Games That Weren't

Legend tells of a breed of Amiga games that never crawled out of the primordial development swamp of their early existence. Games that never stood blinking in the sunlight of the gaming world. Games that were never devoured by predators of the Amiga jungle. They are the... Amiga Games That Weren't.

Some 5,000 Amiga games were released commercially. However, there are a significant number that were never released. The aim of this site is to find out what happened to them and (if possible) allow them to be released. Expect many to be lost forever. It'll be an interesting journey nonetheless.

Amiga Games That Weren't is a companion site to Frank Gasking's Games That Weren't 64 and Timo Weirich's PC Games That Weren't sites. It's also worth checking out the Games That Weren't portal at gtwportal.retro-net.de. The data on unreleased games is primarily based on raw data from the Hall Of Light with further information discovered during investigations.

aGTW News

Tue 5 October 2010

The full version of long lost Palace Software game Hostile Breed has been located and released by Amiga Games That Weren't.

Hostile Breed was widely reviewed in the various Amiga magazines but disappeared when Palace went under.

aGTW features the full three disk game in ADF and IPF format as well as interviews with artist Joe Walker and programmer Rob Stevens. A manual has been created for the game so please report any errors or suggest addenda.

Amiga Games That Weren't covers three games in this update:

Nobby the Aardvark is a famous C64 game that was in development for the Amiga. Sadly, the Amiga was about half complete and was affected by Thalamus' liquidation. aGTW speaks to developers Jonathan Temples and Ashley Hogg.

aGTW talks to the elusive Kwok Man about his game X-Fighter CD32. X-Fighter was the commercial successor to PD game Mad Fighters II, was due to be published by Thalion and was reviewed by a number of Amiga magazines before it mysteriously disappeared.

Finally, we query Ian Upton, the designer of Lone Wolf: the Mirror of Death. This action/platform game was based on a popular series of gamebooks and was released on a number of 8-bit platforms. Although advertised for the Amiga, Atari ST and DOS, only the PC saw a release.

It's time for a bumper update of Amiga Games That Weren't!

The Harold the Hairy Hermit entry has been revisited to add some more input from its musician, Kevin Osborne, and second programmer, Nigel Critten. Kevin has also kindly supplied some MP3s of the game's score.

Kinetica's Saragossa was to follow the developer's The Gold of the Aztecs. Graphic artists Ray Coffey and Jack Wikeley talk about this sci-fi game.

UK readers of The Beano will probably be familar with The Bash Street Kids. Alternative Software had acquired the licence and were in the process of creating a platform game. David Tolley has dug out some of his artwork for this game and reveals more about it.

Shade is the third entry in our series of Amiga Doom clones. Shade was to have been a first person RPG game utilising the impressive "TextDemo" engine. John Hendrikx, Zak Jarvis and Michael A. Krehan recall this project.

Hidden Treasures, the developers of Starray and Amiga Prospector in the Mazes of Xor were working on a platform shooter called Randolph the Robot. Programmer Erik Von Hesse recalls what became of Randolph.

Gore was a pre-Lemmings and technically ambitious DMA Design game that was being programmed by Dave Jones. The artist behind Menace and Blood Money, Tony Smith, talks about the game.

Paul Holmes' game Hunter will be familiar to most Amiga gamers. Paul worked on an unfinished CRL game called Siege On London a 3D H.G. Wellsian shooter about aliens attacking the UK's capital and answers our questions.

Finally, we talk to Steve Vestergaard about his caterpillar-to-butterfly puzzler Creepers. Although published by Psygnosis for the PC, the Amiga version wasn't released.

Tue 23 February 2010

Amiga Games That Weren't dips into the deep pool of unreleased Wolfenstein 3D and Doom clone engines on the Amiga:

Alastair M. Robinson's AMRWolf is an early texture-mapped and ray casting engine created using the Amiga's Copper Chunky mode and a combination of AMOS Pro and machine code. Alastair returns to the pages of aGTW to talk about his engine.

Alex Amsel, of XTreme Racing fame, discusses his Dent A Wolf / DentECTS / Dentaku-26 engine. Two versions of the engine exist; a basic release intended to attract fellow developers and a more advanced version for publishers to view at the European Computer Trade Show (ECTS).

Sat 13 February 2010

Amiga Putty Squad isn't the only version of that game which wasn't released. aGTW's detour into the world of the Playstation 2 and the unreleased Putty Squad PS2 fills in some gaps about the Amiga version. Andy Roberts answers our questions.

Siegemaster is a strategy and RPG game which demonstrates that a full review in a magazine (the notoriously unreliable Amiga Action) is no indication that a game was released. We speak to Edward Grabowski about his game.

Finally, John Dale talks to aGTW about two of his games. Pipeline is an early version of the game that eventually became Pipe Mania and Pipe Dream. This pre-release version differs from the final game in a number of ways. John created another puzzler called Rotoplex. Unlike Pipeline, this game was not eventually released.

Tue 28 April 2009

In our latest update Frankenstein's monster, the Bride of Frankenstein, Count Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Creature From The Black Lagoon and the Mummy all join forces on the Amiga in a Knight Lore inspired isometric puzzler. We speak to Gary Bracey, Simon Butler and Mike Halsall about Universal Monsters.

Mon 19 January 2009

aGTW talks to the developers of two slick platformers, Agricola and Babylonian Twins.

Agricola is an Italian platformer about a farmer and Babylonian Twins is a historical-based game written in Iraq around the time of the first Gulf War.

Wed 14 January 2009

For the first update of 2009 we take a look at some of unreleased (and released) games from Softeyes/Team Hoi:

Ragnov is a late 80s multi-player maze exploration game.

Hawkwind is the former name for Venom Wing (which was released).

Hoi & Hoi Remix AGA is a platformer that WAS released but is covered in aGTW for reasons covered in the entry!

Moon Child AGA is a sort of sequel to Hoi with the same type of colourful platform action.

Mon 29 December 2008

After a long break, Amiga Games That Weren't is back with four new entries:

Harold the Hairy Hermit is a platform game where the titular Harold must rescue puppies.

Four mystery games are curious screenshots that were found on the One Step Beyond disks.

FLOWER is a colourful clear-'em-up and platformer.

Dragon is a shoot-'em-up with some beat-'em-up elements.

The website has also been rejigged and generally updated to a new design by eLowar.
